Moving van rental company U-Haul has announced that it will no longer hire people who admit to vaping and using nicotine products.
The company noted that it will be placing the hiring ban on new employees in 21 states.
“U-Haul International, an industry leader committed to promoting and empowering a healthy workforce, will soon be the first major company in its field to decline job applicants who are nicotine users,” the company said in a December 30 press release.
“We are deeply invested in the well-being of our Team Members,” U-Haul chief of staff Jessica Lopez said in the statement. “Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks. This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our Team Member on their health journey.”
“If we take care for our Team Members, they will take care of our customers,” Lopez exclaimed.
“Headquartered in Phoenix since 1967, U-Haul offers Team Members an array of benefits and resources to become the best version of themselves through its ‘Healthier You’ program. The wellness program is designed to assist Team Members in four areas: health, mindset, nutrition and fitness,” the statement continued.
The states in question include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington state.
The states were chosen because they each have laws that allow employers to decline to hire people who use the products U-Haul opposes.
U-Haul employs some 30,000 people across the U.S. and Canada.
The nanny-style policy, though, brought condemnation from many pro-freedom Twitter users.
They’re clearly trying to cherry pick healthier workers to cut healthcare costs, and if U-Haul gets away with this shit other firms will surely follow with other exemptions. This is an outrageous amount of power to have over workers, and it’s flat-out wrong https://t.co/3OzqsujDl4

Reprehensible! I am an ex-smoker. I quit by switching to e-cigarettes. Others quit with nicotine patches, gum or snus.
U-Haul will no longer hire any nicotine user, including ex-smokers who quit by switching to vastly safer products – even a nicotine patch.

Just an incredibly cruel thing to do to people. Employers have far, far too much power to control workers' lives in America. https://t.co/05OlCZdS9j

Autistic Man Opens His Own Coffee Shop After Being Denied Employment
An autistic man in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, did not take a lack of job prospects sitting down and struck out on his own.
An autistic man in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, did not take a lack of job prospects sitting down and struck out on his own to make his own opportunity in classic American style.
Michael Coyne, who has autism, told Fox News that when he was trying to find a job, he found no one interested in hiring him. He had suspicions that it was because he has autism, but there was just no way to know for sure.
But instead of crying in his beer… or at least his coffee… Coyne set out in typical American fashion and created his own job!
Coyen opened his own coffee shop called Red, White & Brew.
“t’s just a beacon of hope for people with disabilities,” Coyne said of his new beanery.
Coyne, who has autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder, and who is an athlete with Special Olympics of Rhode Island, took a college course on restaurant hospitality in hopes of breaking into that business.
But time after time he was turned down for a job.
Not letting it get him down, Coyne set out on his own and his mother couldn’t be more proud.
“As parents, we look at our kids and see the value,” Michael’s mother Sheila said. “We see what they are capable of, instead of the system that’s consistently labeling them and putting barriers.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s done amazing things,” Sheila added. “And he’s just a really good human being. You feel that when you come in.”
The Coyne family hopes that Michael’s success can be a beacon for others with disabilities, to show them that success is possible despite any physical or mental limitations.
