The Democrats may be hanging a little bit too much hope on their impeachment inquiry as of late, especially given what is coming down the road from the Justice Department.
Those on the left side of the aisle have been sauntering about the Capitol with an air of arrogance unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Their secretive, clandestine impeachment “inquiry” is all that we hear about in the mainstream media, likely adding a feeling of inevitability to the mix for the anti-Trump legislators.
But a rude awakening is in the offing, and Inspector General Michael Horowitz has become a harbinger of this Democratic doom.
Michael Horowitz, the U.S Department of Justice’s (DOJ) inspector general (IG), said Thursday that he is almost done finalizing the report into possible abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Horowitz made the revelation in an October 24 letter addressed to House and Senate leaders.
The IG anticipated that the report would be released to the public with “a few redactions,” adding:
Given that our draft report is lengthy, and concerns sensitive national security and law enforcement matters, we understood that it would take the Department and the FBI some time to work through and appropriately mark the entire report. I can report to you that the [finalizing] process is ongoing and nearing completion, and we are working through these issues constructively with both the Department and the FBI.
After we receive the final classification markings from the Department and the FBI, we will then proceed with our usual process for preparing a final report, including ensuring that appropriate reviews occur for accuracy and comment purposes. Once begun, we do not anticipate the time for that review to be lengthy.
The report details the scandal known colloquially as “SpyGate”, in which the administration of former President Barack Obama may have utilized the salacious and unverifiable Steele Dossier to authorize a FISA warrant to spy on the 2016 Trump campaign.
If found to be true, the revelation could absolutely decimate the already-troubled Democratic party, almost ensuring a landslide victory by Donald Trump in 2020.Don't forget to Like The Washington Sentinel on Facebook and Twitter, and visit our friends at The Republican Legion.

Pelosi Pushes for Parnas on Witness Stand in Impeachment Trial
Pelosi’s time is up on impeachment, yet still she chirps.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s bit part in the impeachment soap opera is over, but it doesn’t appear as though she is quite ready to let it go…almost literally.
After she put an unprecedented hold on the transmittal of the articles of impeachment themselves, Pelosi was badgered and berated. Republicans, alongside members of Pelosi’s own party, decried the stonewalling as unproductive.
Heck, there is even a conspiracy theory floating around that the maneuver was meant to bolster Joe Biden’s chances in Iowa by taking Bernie Sanders and Liz Warren off the campaign trail to do their due diligence back in the Senate.
Now that the articles are in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Pelosi’s work is done.
Yet still she chirps.
From her weekly press briefing, on the subject of Lev Parnas:
Pelosi said, “He’d be a credible witness if what he is testifying to relates to the issue at hand, the president’s behavior. But again, they — there is a process for — for how you go forward with witnesses and that’s not done in the basement of the congressional visitors center but in — you know, among those who are making those decisions about how to go forward. And I’m so proud of our managers, our members have been so positive about it and, you know, this is not without risk. They are going to give a great deal of their intellect as an intellectual resource, as patriots gave me a great deal of time, of course, but also they are courageous, let me say it that way, they are courageous.”
Parnas, a former acquaintance of Rudy Giuliani, has been singing like a bird as of late, as he faces charges of illegally funneling money through foreign channels and back into the American political system. He has suddenly turned on Trump, and is pushing a theory that the White House was directly involved in the hold on Ukrainian military aid that kicked off the entire impeachment hoax.
Pompeo Puts Space Between Himself and Giuliani Pal Lev Parnas
The supposed bombshells from Lev Parnas are fading fast as Washington roundly rejects the idea of his involvement in supposed Ukraine scheme.
Washington DC is a pressure cooker this week, and likely for some time to come. Impeachment is here, folks, and the fireworks show is about to begin.
Tuesday begins the arduous process of adjudicating Donald J. Trump’s impeachment over his alleged abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The articles have been called “shallow” and “flimsy” by their detractors, and “grave” by those who’ve long been in favor of somehow removing Trump from Office.
The Democrats understand that their impeachment battle is an uphill one, given how little power they wield in the Senate currently, and have taken their fight directly to the public instead. The latest affront to the President has come in the form of former acquaintance to Rudy Giuliani Lev Parnas, who has been going around telling the nation that “everyone” was “in on it”, and that the President was doing precisely what the Democrats say he was doing.
On account of these accusations, a number of Washington insiders are attempting to distance themselves from Parnas, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
From an episode of Hugh Hewitt’s radio program this week:
HUGH HEWITT: I want to talk China and Iran, but first, a couple of questions from the headlines. Do you know Lev Parnas?
SECRETARY OF STATE MIKE POMPEO: Never met him.
HEWITT: All right. Until this story broke, were you aware that Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch was being surveilled while serving as an ambassador?
SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO: Yeah, never heard about this at all, Hugh.
SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO: Until this story broke, I had, to the best of my recollection, had never heard of this at all.
Parnas is, however, an indicted individual who may very well be attempting to shorten his coming sentence by performing his best canary impression.
Trump’s Impeachment Team Grows with Addition of Two Legal Legends
Schiff and company look to be completely outgunned at this point.
With President Trump facing an unprecedented impeachment trial beginning early next week, the normal machinations of our nation’s capital seem petty in comparison.
This is the real deal. The big one. This is the moment that the country has been waiting for. The Democrats are salivating over the possibility of shaming their GOP colleagues for their beliefs live and on television, while the Republicans are simply thrilled that they are one step closer to having closure in this mess.
There is no reason to believe that President Trump will be removed from office, given that the Senate is strongly held by the GOP, and their ringleader Mitch McConnell has already made us all aware of how this fracas will conclude: With the exoneration of No. 45.
And, as if that weren’t enough reason to rest our weary heads, the President has added a pair of litigious legends to his team.
Ken Starr, the former independent counsel who led the Whitewater investigation into then-President Bill Clinton in the mid-1990s, and attorney Alan Dershowitz will join President Trump’s impeachment defense team, Fox News has learned.
The prominent lawyers are among several attorneys added to the team as the president’s impeachment trial gets underway, with proceedings kicking off Thursday and moving into full swing next Tuesday.
The team will also include former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, former federal prosecutor Robert Ray and Jane Raskin, who was part of the president’s legal team during former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. Both Starr and Dershowitz are former Fox News contributors.
A familiar face from the aforementioned Clinton impeachment weighed in via social media.
The inclusion of Starr drew an immediate reaction from Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern whose affair with Clinton eventually led to his impeachment before he was acquitted in a Senate trial. “This is definitely an ‘are you f—-ng kidding me?’ kinda day,” she tweeted.
Democratic lawmakers are likely equally as stumped, wondering how in the world they will be able to compete with this dynamic duo.
Comey Under Investigation For Leaking Classified Info Involving Why He Took Power From Lynch In Clinton Case
The New York Times is breaking, and desperately spinning, the reports that former FBI Director James Comey is under investigation for leaking classified information.
NYT tweeted: “U.S. prosecutors appear to be scrutinizing whether James Comey illegally disclosed classified secrets, part of an unusual inquiry into years-old leaks that leaves law enforcement officials open to accusations of politicizing their work.”
Breaking News: U.S. prosecutors appear to be scrutinizing whether James Comey illegally disclosed classified secrets, part of an unusual inquiry into years-old leaks that leaves law enforcement officials open to accusations of politicizing their work https://t.co/ZEA82KJYei
— The New York Times (@nytimes) January 16, 2020
Federal prosecutors in Washington are investigating a years-old leak of classified information about a Russian intelligence document, and they appear to be focusing on whether the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey illegally provided details to reporters, according to people familiar with the inquiry.
The case is the second time the Justice Department has investigated leaks potentially involving Mr. Comey, a frequent target of President Trump, who has repeatedly called him a “leaker.” Mr. Trump recently suggested without evidence that Mr. Comey should be prosecuted for “unlawful conduct” and spend years in prison.
The timing of the investigation could raise questions about whether it was motivated at least in part by politics. Prosecutors and F.B.I. agents typically investigate leaks of classified information around the time they appear in the news media, not years later. And the inquiry is the latest politically sensitive matter undertaken by the United States attorney’s office in Washington, which is also conducting an investigation of Mr. Comey’s former deputy, Andrew G. McCabe, that has been plagued by problems.
Law enforcement officials are scrutinizing at least two news articles about the F.B.I. and Mr. Comey, published in The New York Times and The Washington Post in 2017, that mentioned the Russian government document, according to the people familiar with the investigation. Hackers working for Dutch intelligence officials obtained the document and provided it to the F.B.I., and both its existence and the collection of it were highly classified secrets, the people said. Until people start going to prison, I don’t care. Wake me up when there’s been a perp walk. How long have we been hearing about someone being “investigated?”
I want to think that this is William Barr’s doing, in order to put James Comey in prison, but given the Attorney General’s track record of “talk big but do nothing” I don’t expect anything to happen here.
Government Watchdog Drops Bombshell Report Stating White House Broke the Law
The timing of the release is just another part of the DC soap opera, however.
For those who still believe that Washington DC’s machinations come to us in coincidence by happenstance, I envy your naiveté.
None of the blustering bombast of The Beltway arrives accidentally right on time. This Washington waltz is choreographed down to the hour, folks, and once you begin to succumb to this reality, it is nearly impossible to take these proverbial x-ray glasses off.
Take Nancy Pelosi’s withholding of the articles of impeachment, for example. This was absolutely an act of surgical, chronological aggression. Pelosi and her colleague Adam Schiff dragged impeachment on and on until they could vote on the articles themselves just before the Christmas break. Then, by leaving the prospect of impeaching the President hanging in the air, it allowed Americans of all shapes and sizes to head home, face their families and loved ones, and have a big, ugly discussion about what was going on in our nation’s capital…all while the hovering cloud of Christmas morality hung just over their heads.
Pelosi was betting that the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future would make a visit to some of those politicos who were either publicly or privately on the fence over impeachment.
The jury is still out as to the efficacy of Pelosi’s maneuver, but it hasn’t stopped a number of other political entities from dropping their own conveniently-timed “bombshells”.
The White House budget office violated the law when it froze U.S. military aid to Ukraine, the Government Accountability Office concluded in a new report.
President Donald Trump ordered the hold on the critical security assistance in July, a slew of senior White House officials testified to House impeachment investigators late last year. It was a move that coincided with an effort by the president and his allies to pressure Ukraine to investigate Trump’s Democratic rivals.
“Faithful execution of the law does not permit the president to substitute his own policy priorities for those that Congress has enacted into law,” the GAO wrote in an eight-page report released on Thursday.
The timing of this release is suspect, to say the least, coming just hours before members of the Senate were sworn in for the coming impeachment trial.
Giuliani Pal Parnas Drops Bombshells on Rachel Maddow Show as Impeachment Looms
But is Parnas simply looking to reduce his sentence?
Where it stands today, the Democrats still have a whole lot of work left to do when it comes to impeachment, and they are running out of time.
The Senate impeachment trial is set to begin on Tuesday, under the guidance of Mitch McConnell – a Trump loyalist who has made it clear that he will be working to expediently exonerate the President. This means that the GOP is fairly united behind the idea that there will be few, if any, witnesses called once impeachment hits the upper chamber.
Democrats have now been forced into a corner, and it seems that their modus operandi will be launching a very public smear campaign against the President in order to force the hand of McConnell.
Just this week, an indicted acquaintance of Rudy Giuliani, Lev Parnas, took to The Rachel Maddow Show to push this new tactic in earnest.
Host Rachel Maddow asked Parnas about his allegation that President Trump knew about Parnas’ activities in Ukraine and if this meant that, “the president was aware that you and Mr. Giuliani were working on this effort in Ukraine to basically try to hurt Joe Biden’s political career, he knew about that?”
Parnas said, “Yeah. It was all about Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and also, Rudy had a personal thing with the Manafort stuff, the black ledger. And that was another thing that they were looking into. But it was never about corruption. It was never — it was strictly about Burisma, which included Hunter Biden and Joe Biden.”
This statement refutes the plausible deniability defense that the President was merely looking to fight a generic sense of “corruption” overseas, particularly in regard to an ally on whom the United States spends plenty of taxpayer dollars.
It should be remembered, however, that Parnas is not the first indicated individual to “turn” on President Trump, and that the testimony of those facing sentencing carries with it a certain inevitable air of doubt.
After Strange Parnas Notes Revealed, Ukraine Opens Yovanovitch Surveillance Probe
There are most twists to this tale than hairs on a dog.
The saga surrounding UkraineGate is playing out like a proper political soap opera, with twists and turns not dissimilar to those on repeat in nursing homes around the nation.
The basic gist of the story, from the liberal point of view, has been that President Trump and his colleagues attempted to extort Ukraine using congressionally approved military aid in exchange for the announcement of an investigation into Joe Biden and his family.
From there, that bizarre starting point, the story turns truly absurd, with characters such as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani allegedly playing a major role in the scheme.
Now, after one of Giuliani’s Ukrainian associates began to tell his side of the story, another shocking twist to the tale has arrived in the form of a plan to surveil former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. The revelation has spawned an investigation in Kiev.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry, which runs the police forces, said in a statement that Ukrainian police “are not interfering in the internal political affairs of the United States.”
“However, the published messages contain facts of possible violations of Ukrainian law and of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, which protect the rights of diplomats on the territory of another state,” the statement continued.
Yovanovitch was removed from her position within the State Department by Donald Trump – a move that many Democrats believe may have been in order to further his alleged misconduct in regard to Ukraine.
The surveillance of Yovanovitch was revealed after Lev Parnas, the aforementioned associate of Mr. Giuliani, turned over text message records to House Democrats several days ago.
